And although a traumatised mole does not have to be removed, it is worth making an appointment with a dermato-oncologist to make sure it is a harmless nevus or keratoma.
It is also not a good idea to treat a damaged mole with coloured antiseptics such as green tea, iodine or manganese, as the dye will make dermatoscopy, a method of examination in which the mass is viewed under high magnification, very difficult.
To avoid infection, treat the injured area with an aqueous chlorhexidine solution or clean water and then seal with an absorbent pad patch.
If your doctor confirms that the mole is harmless, you can leave it alone. However, if it is bulging and in an area where it is constantly being damaged, it is safer to remove it to avoid re-traumatising it.
